West Coast Trail 2005
We are
home after seven rugged days on the West Coast Trail. Our return signaled
the end of a very long and challenging
hike. I am nursing the remnants of a black eye (contact with a root),
battered knee (contact with a boardwalk) and bruises. All of this is
accompanied by physical and mental exhaustion. Not sure I will ever say I
had a great time but it seems to be enough to say that I successfully
completed the hike.
The trail threw just about every imaginable
obstacle in our path. Our days were filled with thick Sitka tree
roots, deep mud puddles, slick boardwalks, large boulders, soft sand,
massive driftwood tree jams, surge channels, bogs, fog, cable cars,
suspension bridges, log bridges, high tides, low tides, and oh, the ladders!
By some counts, we climbed up and down over 2000 rungs of ladders. Our
evenings were filled the sights and sounds of the Juan de Fuca Strait,
discussing our day and talking to some of the many hikers we met along the
way.
Hikers
from all over the world flock to the West Coast Trail, anxious to challenge
themselves on a trail with the reputation of being among the most diffiuclt.
I have already started the journal. It
will be short! I was too tired to do much writing and too challenged to take many pictures.
Our next adventure? The
International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico!
